Enzo Maresca recently named the 27-man squad for the UECL league phase. Surprisingly, Cole Palmer did not make the cut for Chelsea. The 22-year-old won’t be a part of the Blues’ squad travelling through Europe. Since his arrival from Man City, the 22-year-old went on to secure 42 G/A in 48 games last season. He became a key player for the Blues. The midfielder would always find a way to contribute to his team. He ended up winning the Premier League Young Player of the Season Award. Now, the 22-year-old is also a part of the 30-men shortlist for the Ballon d’Or award.
Why did Maresca snub Cole Palmer from Chelsea lineup?
As per football.london, Maresca’s made the decision in order to balance the load on the players. The Blues have a stacked roster with more than 40+ players. So, it was always going to be tough for the coach to chose his lineup. But, his decision is totally understandable. Also, Cole Palmer was not the only big name to be excluded from Chelsea lineup for the UECL League Phase. The likes of Romeo Lavia and Wesley Fofana will also not be playing.
Was leaving Palmer out the right choice?
The simple answer is – time will tell. On the plus side, if the Blues get through to the knockout stages, they can change their lineup once more in January. The 22-year-old midfielder could be chosen then. Also, it is important that they focus more on the Premier League. At the same time, the Blues will also be playing in the FIFA Club World Cup. So, keeping Cole Palmer on hold to play in the big games is a great move from Maresca. Otherwise also, Chelsea’s lineup should be more than capable enough to see them through from the UECL’s league phase.
