Manchester United Exit Champions League Despite a Better Goal Difference

All hopes of Manchester United progressing to the next stage of the Champions League can be omitted, disregarding the result between Paris Saint-Germain vs Istanbul Basaksehir.

The match in Paris will be resuming on Wednesday from the 14th minute and the scoreline at 0-0. It was suspended due to an accusation of the racial term being used on Istanbul Basaksehir’s assistant coach Pierre Webo by the 4th official.

PSG are through despite being on the same points as Manchester United. The result against Basaksheir will only decide if they will top the group or finish 2nd.

The rules in the Champions League states that tie-breakers in the group will be first decided by the head-to-head records. If that remains the same, goal difference shall be considered.

Manchester United had won their first match against PSG 2-1. But that result was shadowed by their 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford, thanks to Neymar’s added-time goal, giving PSG the head-to-head advantage. United’s +5 goal difference over PSG’s +3 won’t matter in this situation.

The Red Devils had started the season on high with impressive wins over last year’s finalist and semi-finalist. They were somehow considered favorites.

But the shocking loss against Istanbul was seen to be the turning point. With only a point needed in the last 2 games, United’s tactical mistakes and poor performances resulted in their exit. In the last fixture on Tuesday against RB Leipzig, United tried their best with a late comeback fight but failed short a goal.

They will be returning to the Europa League where they were knocked out in the semi-final last season. Whereas for Istanbul, they are out of all the European competitions finishing last in the group, with their first win in the league(against United) being the biggest positive they will be taking home.
