Joshua Zirkzee was selected against Everton to provide Manchester United with the ‘technical skill’ required to win, according to Ruben Amorim. The 23 year-old striker joined Old Trafford from Bologna in the summer. But he has struggled since then scoring only once in 18 games. As a result, Rasmus Hojlund is regarded as United’s first choice striker.
Hojlund scored twice in a 3-2 win against Bodo/Glimt in midweek. But the Dutchman got the chance to play the Toffees, despite speculation of a loan move away in January. The call did cause concerns among some United fans. But Amorim revealed the reasoning behind the decision during the pre-match press conference.
While speaking to Sky Sports, Amorim said,
“Zirkzee is a talented player. He is a Manchester United player and I think he’s ready to play in that position. I think we need the characteristics of Josh in this game; they [Everton] have two centre-backs who are strong in the air and I want [someone] more technical who can reach the ball in different areas. It’s just an idea, let’s see the result.”

The ‘idea’ of Amorim worked wonders as Joshua Zirkzee scored a brace over the 4-0 victory against Everton on Sunday. The Dutch striker played the best game so far in the United kit and also broke his goalscoring drought. He paired up perfectly with Marcus Rashford who also scored a brace.
Amorim mentioned in the press conference that they will have to play smartly and that is what Joshua Zirkzee exactly gives you. The 23 y/o made brilliant runs, paired up well with Amad from the right flank and also finished good. With his help United move up to the top half of the Premier League table.
