Xavi Hernandez has identified a core group of players at Barcelona for his project

Xavi Hernandez returned to Barcelona as Manager in the middle of the last season. The team was struggling to win football matches and looked far from convincing. Even without any new additions, the Spanish legend had improved the squad to an extent that the Blaugrana started winning games comfortably.

However, after the acquisitions of Ferran Torres and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, Barcelona was able to finish the season as runners-up in La Liga. But the squad was far from the level they expect it to be. Thus, after a busy summer, Xavi Hernandez has now built a strong core at the club.

The core group of players includes Robert Lewandowski, Marc Andre Ter Stegen, Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Pedri, Gavi, and Ousmane Dembele. The Polish international was signed to bang in goals for the club and that’s just exactly what he has been upto. Meanwhile, Ter Stegen has returned to form this season and just conceded once since the start. This core group of players forms an essential spine to the way Xavi wants the team to play.

A strong and robust midfield is the heart of Xavi Hernandez’s era

Sergio Busquets has been a stellar player for the Blaugrana for over a decade now. The Spanish international is one of the best midfielders ever. However, the true potential of the defensive midfielder is unlocked with two agile and equally creative midfield partners.

Barcelona has found these partners for Busquets in the young Pedri and Gavi. The Spanish Manager has utilized both the youngsters extensively regardless of their age and experience. Frenkie De Jong is considered to be the long-term successor of Sergio Busquets as the latter is leaving Barcelona after this season. However, Pedri and Gavi form the other two important pieces of the midfield.

Both the players remind you of a young Xavi and Iniesta of sorts. Barcelona has always built successful teams around strong and creative midfielders who can dictate the game. Pedri and Gavi are doing just that whenever they are put on the field. Their passing ability is par excellence and they are astute readers of the game. Ousmane Dembele has benefitted from the youngsters as well since he is attributed less defensive responsibilities now. Let’s just hope that Barcelona is able to continue this impressive run of form and the two young stars are able to march on with strong performances!!
