Xavi is against the signing of Ruben Neves in hopes of replacing Busquets

On Wednesday, Jorge Mendes met with the Barcelona board to discuss various matters. The future of Ansu Fati and Alejandro Balde’s contract extension were the major topics of discussion. Jorge Mendes also offered Barcelona the chance to sign Ruben Neves in the summer, according to Mundo Deportivo.

As one of the top candidates to replace Sergio Busquets, Neves currently plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers. In the absence of a contract renewal, Busquets is frustrated with his situation. With Busquets considering offers from abroad, the need for a new midfielder could become even greater.

Is Neves the proper replacement for Busquets?

Jorge Mendes comes into play here. In light of the fact that the player’s current deal at Wolves expires in 2024, the Portuguese agent has offered Joan Laporta the chance to sign Neves next season on a cut-price deal.

In spite of this, Xavi Hernandez isn’t fully on board with the idea of singing Neves. According to the Barcelona coach, the Portuguese international has some deficiencies when it comes to replacing Busquets. Xavi prefers Martin Zubimendi, a Real Sociedad starlet with extensive experience in Spanish football, however.

However, Barcelona may not be able to afford the midfielder’s €60 million release clause. It will be important to see how Barcelona approaches the market. In addition, Mendes has discussed Fati’s future, and should the forward leave Camp Nou in the summer, Barça would have a major revenue stream.

Only time will tell what awaits the Catalans by the end of the season.
