FC Porto president Andre Villas-Boas has revealed the club were exploring the possibility of re-signing Diogo Jota in 2026.

Porto Had a Long-Term Plan to Bring Jota Back Home

FC Porto were quietly in works to welcome Diogo Jota back to Estádio do Dragão in 2026.

According to club president Andre Villas-Boas, discussions had already begun with Jota’s agent, Jorge Mendes, about a potential return. He said, “Unfortunately, we were working with agent Jorge Mendes on Diogo Jota’s return to FC Porto, and it won’t be possible.” as quoted by the Mirror.

The talks were reportedly friendly and hopeful. The Portuguese attacker had two years left on his Liverpool contract.

Jota had spent a loan spell in 2016/17 season at Porto. He scored nine goals in 37 appearances and made a great impression at the club and on the fans.

The objective was to bring him back at the end of the loan with the Reds. There were proposed plans for a possible return in 2026. Although, all plans for the future were dashed when Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, died in a car accident.

Tributes Pour In as Football World Mourns One of Their Own

The news of Jota’s passing sent shockwaves through the football world. His funeral took place in Gondomar on July 5. The Liverpool squad went to pay their respects along with Villas-Boas and a number of former teammates. Jota’s link with Porto was entirely committed. Also, at the same time, his brother Silva was running with Porto in their youth ranks too.

In the meantime, Villas-Boas confirmed that both Diogo and Andre would be honorary members of FC Porto. Memorial cards will also be there at their tribute site as a mark of the club’s respect. It has now become a moment of collective grief for the football community.
