ATLETICO MADRID

Atletico Madrid, also known as Club Atletico de Madrid, is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid. The club’s Spanish name means Athletic Club of Madrid. This club is commonly referred to as Atletico Madrid in English or simply as Atletico or Atleti. They play in La Liga, which is the Spanish top division league. The club plays its home games at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium located in Madrid.

History

Atletico’s home kit is red and white vertical striped shirts, blue shorts, and blue and red socks. Meanwhile, this combination has been used since 1911. Throughout its history, the club has been known by a number of nicknames. It includes Los Colchoneros (“The Mattress Makers”), due to their first team stripes being the same colors as traditional mattresses. However, during the 1970s, they became known as Los Indios. It came as an attribute to the club’s signing of several South American players. This action came especially after the restrictions on signing foreign players were lifted. Meanwhile, Felipe VI, the king of Spain, has been the honorary president of the club since 2003.

Trophies

In terms of league titles won, Atlético Madrid is the third most successful club in Spanish football. They are just behind Real Madrid and Barcelona in this case. Atletico has won La Liga on eleven occasions, including a league and cup double in 1996. They have won the Copa del Rey on ten occasions. Moreover, two Supercopa de Espana, one Copa Presidente FEF, and one Copa Eva Duarte have also been won by the club. In Europe, they won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1962 and were runners-up in 1963 and 1986. They were UEFA Champions League runners-up in 1974, 2014, and 2016. However, the club won the Europa League in 2010, 2012, and 2018. They also managed to win the UEFA Super Cup in 2010, 2012, and 2018 as well as the 1974 Intercontinental Cup. They are the champions of the 2020-2021 La Liga.

Ventures

The club co-owned the Indian Super League (ISL) franchise in Kolkata, formerly named Atletico de Kolkata. ATK won the competition twice, but in 2017 Atlético end its partnership with the club. Atlético also co-owns Liga MX club Atlético San Luis, and the Canadian Premier League side Atlético Ottawa.
