Reigning Indian Super League (ISL) champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant edged past I-League winners Punjab FC 2-0 in a rain-soaked encounter in the Durand Cup on Monday. The Mariners took a lucky lead through an own goal by Punjab FC’s Melroy Assissi in the 23rd minute before Hugo Bumous sealed the win with a header in the second half. Mohun Bagan had an easy win but struggled in the first half

Mohun Bagan started brightly and created a number of chances in the early stages of the match.In the 10th minute, the ball was successfully scored into the net, but unfortunately, the goal was deemed offside.

Punjab FC gradually grew into the match and they had a chance to take the lead in the 20th minute, but Prabhsukhan Singh Gill made a good save to deny Akash Mishra.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 23rd minute when Melroy Assissi scored an own goal. A free kick was awarded to Mohun Bagan on the edge of the box, and Assist deflected Subha Ghosh’s shot into the net.

Mohun Bagan continued to dominate possession after the goal, but they were unable to create any clear-cut chances. Punjab FC had a few chances of their own, but they were unable to find the back of the net.

The second half was a more even affair, with both teams creating chances. Mohun Bagan eventually doubled their lead in the 48th minute through Hugo Bumous.

Liston Colaco delivered an inch-perfect cross from the left, and Bumous headed the ball into the net.

Punjab FC tried to get back into the match, but they were unable to create any clear-cut chances. Mohun Bagan held on to their lead to secure a 2-0 win.
