Player Profile: Carl McHugh, the Unsung Hero

Carl McHugh, the Irish defensive midfielder, came to the Indian Super League in the 2019–20 season. McHugh has been instrumental for every team he plays for. Ahead of the 2023–24 season, Carl McHugh joins FC Goa on a two-year deal.

Career Highlights: Carl McHugh:

Carl McHugh started his youth career with English side Reading FC. While playing for Reading FC, McHugh also spent a short stint with Dundalk FC. Later in 2012, McHugh signed for English fourth-tier side Bradford City.

In 2014, McHugh signed for English Championship side Plymouth Argyle and spent two seasons there. Before coming to India, McHugh also played for Scottish Premiership side Motherwell FC. In India, he started his Hero Indian Super League journey with ATK in 2019.

Performance in ISL:

Starting with ATK, McHugh also played for ATK Mohun Bagan (now renamed as Mohun Bagan Super Giant) before joining FC Goa. In the ISL, the midfielder has appeared in more than 50 games for the Kolkata-based club. McHugh also won the Hero Indian Super League title two times, in 2020 and 2023.

In his debut game in the ISL, Carl McHugh scored an excellent goal from a volley against the Kerala Blasters in the opening match of the 2019–20 season. McHugh has only four ISL goals to his name but has been phenomenal in his role over the last few seasons.

Ahead of the upcoming season, the Irish midfielder joins the Gaurs on a two-year deal.

McHugh possesses a great presence in the center of the park with his versatility and excellent understanding of the game.
