Real Madrid Club de Futbol, which means Royal Madrid Football Club, is commonly known as Real Madrid or simply Real. It is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid. Meanwhile, Real plays in the Spanish first division league, which is known as La Liga.

History

Real Madrid was founded on 6 March 1902 as Madrid Football Club. They have traditionally worn a white home kit since its inception. The title ‘Real’ is Spanish for ‘Royal’. Meanwhile, this was bestowed to the club by King Alfonso XIII in 1920 along with the royal crown in the emblem.

Stadium

The team plays its home matches in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid since 1947. The Stadium has a capacity of 81,044. Unlike most European sporting entities, Real Madrid’s members have owned and operated the club throughout its history. On 9 May 2006, the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium was inaugurated in Real Madrid City. In this stadium, Real Madrid usually trains. The inaugural match was played between Real Madrid and Stade de Reims. From 14 June 2020, the stadium was used by the first team to play their remaining 2019–20 La Liga home games. This was due to remodeling works at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Rivalries

Real Madrid is one of three founding members of La Liga that have never been relegated from the top division. The other two clubs are Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona. Meanwhile, The club holds many long-standing rivalries, most notably El Classico with Barcelona and El Derbi Madrileno with Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid established itself as a major force in both Spanish and European football during the 1950s. Meanwhile, they won five consecutive European Cups and reached the final seven times. This success was replicated in the league, where the club won five times in the space of seven years. This team included Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas, Francisco Gento, and Raymond Kopa, who are considered one of the greatest teams of all time.

In domestic football, the club has won 67 trophies. They have a record 34 La Liga titles, 19 Copa del Rey, 12 Supercopa de Espana, a Copa Eva Duarte, and a Copa de la Liga. In European and worldwide competitions, Real Madrid has won a record 26 trophies. Moreover, they have a record 13 UEFA Champions League titles, two UEFA Cups, and four UEFA Super Cups. In international football, they have achieved a record seven club world championships.

Real Madrid was recognized as the FIFA Club of the 20th Century on 11 December 2000. Moreover, they received the FIFA Centennial Order of Merit on 20 May 2004. Moreover, on 11 May 2010, the club was also awarded Best European Club of the 20th Century by the IFFHS. In June 2017, the team succeeded in becoming the first club to win consecutive Champions League titles. Then Real made it three in a row and four in five seasons in May 2018, extending their lead atop the UEFA club rankings. As of 2020, Real Madrid is ranked third behind Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
