Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti made several changes in his midfield during the UEFA Champions League match against Braga.
According to a report from AS, there are indications that veteran midfielder Luka Modric may find himself on the bench for the first El Clasico of the season against Barcelona. He was in the starting lineup for the match against Portugal.
Modric experienced a relatively slow start to the 2023/24 season. At that time, Carlo Ancelotti favored younger players over Modric’s experience. However, the Croatia international has begun to regain his importance. He has started two of Real Madrid last three matches in various competitions.
Luka Modric has been open about his concerns regarding limited playing time this season. He was a substitute in the previous Champions League game against Napoli and also did not start in the recent La Liga clash against Sevilla.
Real Madrid midfield getting competitive might be a problem for Modric
Luka Modric got a substantial 94 minutes of playing time in the game against SC Braga on Tuesday night. However, it appears that Real Madrid manager Ancelotti is planning to bench Modric for the highly anticipated match against Barcelona. While Modric has been candid about his feelings, it’s important to acknowledge that it can be challenging for Ancelotti to rotate his team after every match, given the competition and demands of a busy schedule.
Carlo Ancelotti has acknowledged the challenge of rotating Luka Modric in the team. But there’s a perception that Modric’s continuity has declined. Additionally, other midfield players like Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Jude Bellingham have been delivering exceptional performances. Thus, adds to the competition for places in the Real Madrid midfield.
Additionally, there is some pressure from the board to avoid relying on veteran stars for the major matches. Consequently, unless there are significant injuries, Ancelotti is likely to use Modric in matches of lesser significance. This is why Modric’s participation in El Clasico against Barcelona is anticipated to be limited.
