Real Madrid has been consistently following a strategy of acquiring young and promising talents with an eye toward the future. This approach has been exemplified by signings like Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo. And most recently, Endrick Felipe, who has a contract with to Palmeiras until the summer of 2024. The latest addition to this burgeoning list is the young Turkish international, Arda Güler.
Real Madrid secured the services of the 18-year-old former Fenerbahçe player Arda Güler for a transfer fee of €20 million, outmaneuvering Barcelona in the process. On the day of his introduction, Güler remarked:
“There were numerous clubs that extended offers, but once Real Madrid came into the picture, everything else seemed less significant.”
Contrary to the speculations that he would be immediately loaned out, Arda Güler was integrated directly into the first-team squad. Carlo Ancelotti engaged with Güler personally to facilitate his signing. He holds the belief that the young talent can contribute quality to an already star-studded team.
Arda Güler can bring real quality in the Los Blancos squad
Güler’s primary foot is his left, but he exhibits a strong proficiency with his right as well. His possession game has additional exceptional creativity and attacking technical prowess. Notably, his straightforward, forward dribbles with the ball and his striking ability are standout features.
Arda Güler possesses the capability to bypass opponents using his left foot, employing skillful moves without necessarily altering his speed. However, this is an aspect that he will need to refine in La Liga, where defenders excel at delaying play without lunging into tackles. Similar to how Vinícius adapted to Spanish football, Güler will need to acquire the skill of maneuvering past defenders when initiating from a stationary position.
Güler’s inclination towards direct play can occasionally result in him missing chances to engage in combination plays. On the other hand, his capacity to bypass opponents by driving past them can create additional opportunities for collaboration further up the field. These opportunities may involve linking up with the team’s central forward, wide attackers. Or, depending on the head coach’s tactical systems, the central midfielders.
At Real Madrid, Güler is likely to develop intriguing connections with players like Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham. These two are adept at crafting interior opportunities and unsettling the opposition’s defensive lines through their penetrative runs from deeper positions. This dynamic could be an ideal match for the young Turkish international. He can leverage his ball-carrying skills and striking prowess to maximize the utilization of these spaces.
