Tributes pour in after Chelsea legend retires

Ex-Chelsea star player Eden Hazard announced his retirement from professional football. The Belgian winger became a free agent in the summer after his time at Real Madrid came to an end. Hazard started his career at Lille – impressing with his performance in Ligue 1 before joining Chelsea. The 32-year-old footballer announced his transfer of joining Chelsea on Twitter before completing his move to Stamford Bridge.

The Belgium-born player made himself as one of the best wingers in Premier League history, making 352 appearances for the Blues and netting 110 goals and 92 assists between 2012 and 2019. His trophy cabinet filled up quickly as he won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League honours with Chelsea before moving to Real Madrid. Eden Hazard made 76 appearances for real Madrid, but never made the impact as he had suffered due to a series of injuries while his time at the club. Nevertheless he did win a Champions League winners’ medal in 2021/22.

Chelsea legend pens down his retirement

The ex-Chelsea player gave thanks to everyone who helped his career through social media platform Instagram. Hazard’s statement read:

“You must listen to yourself and say stop at the right time.

“After 16 years and more than 700 matches played, I have decided to end my career as a professional footballer.

“During my career I was lucky to meet great managers, coaches and teammates – thank you to everyone for these great times, I will miss you all. I also want to thank the clubs I have played for: LOSC, Chelsea and Real Madrid; and thank the RBFA for my Belgian Selection.

“A special thank you to my family, my friends, my advisors and the people who have been close to me in good times and bad. Finally, a huge thank you to you, my fans, who have followed me for all these years and for your encouragement everywhere I have played.

“Now is the time to enjoy my loved ones and have new experiences. See you off the field soon my friends.”

Now, Kylian Mbappe and Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes have joined many other fellow professionals in sending messages to Hazard following his announcement.
