Antoine Griezmann made a shocking return to Atletico Madrid as Barcelona agreed to loan move on the transfer deadline day. The Catalans were desperate to load off the Frenchman all summer because of his high wages and falling form. And after a hectic summer, Barcelona was successful in cutting some costs from their bills as they loaned out Griezmann.
Barcelona signed Griezmann for a price of 120 million but little did they know that price was not worth it. Playing for the Catalans he appeared 102 times in which he scored 35 goals in all competitions. And failing to prove himself in Camp Nou and because of high charges Barcelona listed him for transfer this summer.
But the Catalans failed to find a buyer for the Frenchman in time, following which they lost Lionel Messi to PSG. However, Barcelona made contact with Atletico Madrid on the transfer deadline day to offer them their former player Griezmann. And as the time ran towards the transfer deadline Barcelona and Atletico Madrid announced reaching a deal regarding Antoine Griezmann.
The Frenchman joined his former club on initially a one-year loan deal, with having an option to extend it by another year. While Atletico will not be paying any loan fee to Barcelona as they will pay Griezmann’s full wage. The Frenchman also agreed to take a 40% pay cut in his wage in order to join Atletico.
Speaking of the second year of the loan, there is a clause that has been made clear by Barcelona president Joan Laporta. Earlier it was known that Atletico were obliged to permanently buy Griezmann for €40 million after the loan deal ends. But as per Laporta, if Griezmann plays 2022/23 season at Atletico and appears in 50% of the matches for them then will Atletico will pay €40 million. And with that, it is all about all the details of the shocking return of Antoine Griezmann to Atletico Madrid.
