Benzema rescues Real Madrid with Late Equalizer against Atletico Madrid

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Karim Benzema scored a late equalizer for Real Madrid as it finished all square in their derby against Atletico Madrid.

The title race is not over yet. There was buzz about Diego Simeone’s men running away with the trophy for the first time since 2014. Now it seems like these thoughts might need a rephrase as Atletico Madrid continues to drop points. They have dropped 7 points in their last 5 games now as they failed to get the job done against Real Madrid.

Real Madrid would be disappointed with themselves as they failed to close the gap between them and the table leaders.

Luis Suarez opened the scoring for the home side just after 15 minutes and it seemed like they might run away with all the 3 points. But Zinedine Zidane’s men had other ideas as Benzema struck an 88th-minute goal to make it all even.

“I think they were better in the first half and we were better in the second. And this is a good point for us. The result means the title race is still on our minds.” – Karim Benzema in a post-match interview

ARE REAL MADRID OUT OF THE TITLE RACE AFTER DRAW AGAINST ATLETICO MADRID

Real Madrid went into this match just five points behind Atletico Madrid, who had a game in their hand. Zidane already commented before the game that the title race won’t be impacted by the results of the derby game.

“In the end, the most important thing was the second half, to change the game. It’s a point, we’re alive and we’ll keep fighting. Our objective is [ultimately to win the league].” Zidane in the post-match interview.

The happiest team after this match result would be none other than the runner-ups of last year, Barcelona. They won against Osasuna on the same night and jumped to 2nd in the League table.

Real Madrid are currently sitting 3rd in the League Table with 54 points in 26 matches. Next up for the Los Blancos is a match on their home turf as they host Elche.
