Time-Management Strategies for Student-Athletes Balancing Sports and Studies

Being a student-athlete can feel like you are constantly running between two worlds: sport and studies. Between practices, games, homework, and exams, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. However, a little bit of planning and the right strategies can help you crush it in both areas without burning out. Here’s how to make it work. 

  1. Get Your Schedule In Order

First things first: you need to see everything you’re dealing with. Whether it’s a physical planner or a digital tool, get everything down in one place. When you can see it all laid out, like when you need to buy homework or submit that essay, it’s way easier to make sure nothing falls through the cracks. 

What you’ll want to include: 

  • Class times. Don’t forget about those midterms and assignment deadlines!
  • Sports schedule. Practices, games, travel, and recovery time. 
  • Personal commitments. Friends, family, and self-care—don’t leave them out!
  1. Block Your Time and Prioritize

Once you’ve got everything in your calendar, break it down into manageable blocks. The key here is prioritization. What’s urgent? What’s important? For example, if you’ve got a huge project due, make sure you carve out time for that, even if it means cutting down on Netflix for a night.

Not every moment of your day is going to be packed, and you’ll find plenty of small breaks between classes, before practice, or during travel time. Instead of scrolling endlessly through social media, use those intervals to deal with smaller tasks. For instance, you can use the 20-minute gap you have while you’re on the bus to read a chapter or jot down a to-do list.

Lean on your teammates for help when it comes to studying or getting organized. Maybe someone has a great study method, or you can trade notes on a class you both take. Teamwork isn’t just for the field; it can also help you tackle schoolwork. You can meet up with teammates who are in your classes, or create a group chat to share notes and resources.

You’re going to have to make sacrifices, and it’s okay to say no when something isn’t aligned with your priorities. Whether it’s skipping a party or passing an extra shift at work, you have to draw the line somewhere. The goal is to find balance and not spread yourself too thin. 

  1. Use Technology to Stay on Track

You don’t need to do it all by hand anymore. There are plenty of apps that can help you stay organized and on top of things. A digital calendar, a task manager, and even apps that block distractions during study time can make a big difference. 

  • Google Calendar. Sync all your events, classes, and practice schedules so you never forget. 
  • Trello. Organize tasks into boards so you can easily track assignments, deadlines, and projects. 
  • Notion. A super flexible tool that works for everything from note-taking to planning your entire semester. 
  1. Keep Open Communication With Coaches and Professors

You’re not in this alone. Keep your professors and coaches in the loop if something’s coming up. Let them know if you’re missing a class for a game or if you need an extension on an assignment because of a heavy practice schedule. Most people will work with you if you’re upfront and respectful about it. 

  1. Sleep, Eat, and Recover

You’re working your body hard in sports, so don’t skimp on sleep or recovery. Lack of sleep affects both your physical performance and your ability to focus in class. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. If you’re still feeling tired, don’t be afraid to take a nap. Your body and brain will thank you.
