Reports now suggest that Man United are nearing a deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting, beating Arsenal to the punch.
United Set to Beat Arsenal to Gyokeres Deal
Manchester Utd are reportedly on the verge of pulling off a surprise move for Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres, as per Portuguese outlet SIC Noticias. They might overtake Arsenal in a race that has been on all summer.
The Gunners have been in talks with the Portuguese side for weeks. But, United have now entered the frame with a similar offer. That is putting them right at the front of the queue. Gyokeres smashed 39 league goals in just 33 appearances for Sporting last season. He is one of Europe’s most wanted forwards.
The Red Devils are struggling with poor form from Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee at the moment. They are keen to bring in a proven finisher. Arsenal’s offer is around £60.5m. But, delays in sealing the deal may have opened the door for their rivals.
Amorim Targets Firepower
Ruben Amorim is now at the centre at Old Trafford. So, the Red Devils are going all-in on a fresh attacking rebuild. They’ve already snapped up Matheus Cunha from Wolves. They have almost completed Bryan Mbeumo’s £71m move as well.
However, Amorim knows Gyokeres well from their time together at Sporting. The Swede delivered back-to-back league titles in Portugal. The forward wants to test himself in England.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have been slow in finalising their approach. They are risking losing out on a player who could solve their striker issues. The Gunners were already affected after the injury setbacks to both Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz last season. Given that, they need to sign a centre-forward this transfer window.
Now, Gyokeres looks hungry for the next step in his career. And United’s sharp move may just give him the EPL chance he’s been waiting for.
