Chelsea have sent what will be considered a clear message to Borussia Dortmund over Carney Chukwuemeka – and it’s not the one they will have be hoping for. The Bundesliga side are still waiting for the green light on a loan deal despite negotiations dragging on for weeks.
Dortmund insisted on a temporary solution, but Chelsea shut the door on them. The message? No loan, no compromise — only former sale. With the summer window ticking down, Chukwuemeka’s career remains finely in the balance.
Chelsea Reject Loan Approach for Chukwuemeka
Borussia Dortmund was in talks with Chukwuemeka about signing him on loan temporarily as a more powerful summer 2025/26 midfield target. But Chelsea have stood strong in the middle of negotiations: the 20-year-old will not leave Stamford Bridge other than for a permanent deal.
Dortmund explored a loan deal with a €35 million buy option, but Chelsea showed no interest. The Blues will not consider any loan deal, including one with a purchase option. Under new boss Enzo Maresca, Chelsea seek to clarify on every player’s role moving forward.
Injuries limited Chukwuemeka to 12 appearances last season, but he has impressed in pre-season training. Yet, his status remains unresolved. The club’s position is clear — he will either be fully reintegrated into the squad or moved on for good.
Dortmund Exploring Other Midfield Options
Dortmund have started to scout midfield alternatives, with Chelsea refusing to green light a loan departure. The German club had made Chukwuemeka their priority in terms of his profile and technique but Chelsea’s position has dampened their interest.
And as it stands, Chukwuemeka is continuing to train at Cobham and is still a member of the Blues pre-season squad. But unless another club can come up with a suitable permanent bid his future is in the balance. The feeling is that Chelsea are looking for at well in excess of €35–40 million.
Barring an unlikely U-turn by Chelsea, Dortmund will leave the table. The coming weeks are crucial. Chelsea and Chukwuemeka are both waiting to see if a permanent fix materializes. However, one thing that is clear is that the Blues are unwilling to change their stance on a loan move.
