The Chelsea loan carousel is whirring into action once more – and this time, it’s disrupting the plans of their new Argentine talent. And with Mamadou Sarr returning to RC Strasbourg this week, the Blues are rethinking their options for Anselmino.
The 20-year-old centre half, who was brought in with a view to long term development, was set to join Strasbourg. But plans have gone abruptly off the rails.
Strasbourg Slot Filled, Anselmino Looks Elsewhere
Chelsea had lined up Strasbourg as Anselmino’s destination, especially with plans to leverage their BlueCo multi-club model. But with Mamadou Sarr now on his way back to the Ligue 1 club, that door has shut.
Sarr’s return has taken the spot Chelsea intended for Anselmino. It’s one of those not so subtle indications that Strasbourg have already sorted out their backline properly and that Chelsea need to scout elsewhere to ensure the new recruit gets his game time. Although still raw at 20, Anselmino has earned high praise, and he needs regular minutes to continue developing.
The Argentine centre-back only signed from Boca Juniors this summer and is not in Chelsea’s immediate first-team plans. It is still believed the most likely outcome would be a loan, however, not in France.
Chelsea Exploring Alternative Loan Options
Now that Strasbourg is off the table, Chelsea are looking at other potential destinations in Europe. The goal? Get Anselmino to a club that will let him play regular top tier football — hopefully in an impactful league with significant development.
Chelsea have checked out clubs in Belgium, Portugal, and the Eredivisie, while they’ve also kept a Championship option on the table. Chelsea’s recruitment team is playing patient and picky — it wants the perfect fit, not just any club. They want to make sure that Anselmino’s first taste of European racing puts him on the path to evolution to the next level.
One thing is for sure: Chelsea do still regard Anselmino as a player to develop, but his next move is now elsewhere from Strasbourg.
