Marcus Rashford will wear his idol’s shirt number at Barcelona. The Englishman is set for a fresh start in Spain, following in the footsteps of one of his football heroes.
New Journey, New Number for Rashford at Barcelona
Marcus Rashford is just about to conclude his loan move to Barcelona from Manchester United.
The forward has agreed to a wage reduction in order to be able to move clubs Although, he will remain one of the highest-paid players in European football. If the loan goes as planned, Barca will have the right to sign him for just €30m a year.
Marcus will be taking on the number 14. Which is significant at so many personal levels for him. Thierry Henry, also wore the same kit number when he was at Barcelona. Henry was also part of the 2009 treble-winning side, and he made that number 14 into something other football fans and young footballers, aspire too.
A Tribute to Henry
Rashford’s decision to don the number 14 marks a change from his previous numbers at Man Utd. He started his senior career in the number 39 shirt, then shifted to 19 after a successful debut season. Finally he adopted the famous number 10 shirt. It was once worn by Utd legend Wayne Rooney.
His loan spell at Aston Villa also forced a temporary change in shirt number. At Barca, however, the number 14 goes beyond numbering. It pays homage to the legacy of a legend that motivated him both on and off the field.
Interestingly, it also has its own historic legacy in football. It can be most famously linked to Johan Cruyff with Ajax. While Cruyff did not wear it at Barca, the tradition now continues. For Rashford, this move is than just a change in clubs. For him, it’s about making his name while honoring a footballing hero.
