Arsenal have started early discussions with French club Rennes over a possible move for rising centre-back Jeremy Jacquet.
Arsenal eyeing Rennes young defender
After yet another season of near-misses, Arsenal are determined to not waste any time preparing for the next one.
The Gunners finished second in the EPL and lost to PSG in the semi-finals at the UCL last season. That said, Mikel Arteta’s side are keen to not let this become a repeated pattern. Even though the performances were good, it produced no silverware.
Arsenal are eager to change that and have already brought in some new faces to improve their squad. Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke, have been added to the team. Next for the Gunners is the backline and their new target is 19-year-old Jeremy Jacquet, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Young talent with big potential
Jacquet has represented France at U19 level, made stunning impact for Rennes last season with some brilliant performances. Once he returned from his loan with Clermont Foot, he was fast-tracked into the Rennes first team. Then, he became a regular in Ligue 1.
He showed his maturity and composure in his league appearances. The North London side have at least made initial contact about making their move now. The club already has very good defenders in Saliba, Gabriel, Kiwior, and Ben White. But, the purpose of this move seems to be long-term.
As per Romano, Arsenal could sign the defender now or next year in 2026. The youth international recently signed a new contract with Rennes. So, that may complicate talks somewhat.
However, by making a move for a youngster now it may be a smart move for the club. They are making progress in the squad. The Gunners are making moves in building not just for the present, but for the future as well.
