Chelsea are on the verge of losing one of their brightest academy talents. Donnell McNeilly has rejected a new contract and will leave Stamford Bridge in 2025. The 19‑year striker was a rising star during his breakthrough season but has made it clear he wants genuine first‑team football.
McNeilly Dominates PL2, But Senior Chances Elude Him
McNeilly led Chelsea’s U21s in the 2024/25 season, scoring 13 goals in 20 Premier League 2 appearances, including playoffs. He added two assists, finishing with 15 direct goal involvements. His red-hot form in April 2025 — with goals in three of four matches — earned him a PL2 Player of the Month nomination.
Before that, he smashed 21 goals in 21 games for the U18s in 2023/24. His rise was rapid. In a training match with the first team, he even scored twice, impressing manager Enzo Maresca so much that he cancelled the squad’s day off. Yet despite the hype, McNeilly never made a senior appearance.
But with senior opportunities still beyond his reach McNeilly has decided against re-signing. While his contract will not expire until June 30, 2025, Chelsea have now confirmed he will leave when it does.
High Interest as He Seeks Game Time Elsewhere
McNeilly’s call has turned heads across the football pyramid. Several EFL clubs are actively pursuing him, while a few Premier League sides are also keeping tabs. He’s now eyeing a club where first-team football isn’t just a promise — it’s a plan.
Since he is under 24, Chelsea won’t receive a transfer fee, but they will be entitled to training compensation, as McNeilly has been with the club since U12 level.
His departure adds to the growing list of Cobham graduates taking their talents elsewhere. With his numbers doing the talking and his ambition on full display, the next chapter in McNeilly’s career is wide open — and well worth watching.
