Aston Villa have opened discussions with Arsenal over the possible signing of winger Leandro Trossard.

Emery’s Aston Villa tracking Arsenal star

Aston Villa’s transfer strategy under Unai Emery has been nothing short of bold. Their latest target is proof of that. The Midlands club has made contact with Arsenal regarding a move for Leandro Trossard, as per Football Transfers.

The Belgian player was on Villa’s radar back in January as well. However, the Gunners wasted no time in securing him with a new contract offer. However, he is yet to fully commit to his future at the Emirates. Now, that is leaving the door open for a potential switch.

Emery’s men are in a strong position to negotiate. They are expecting funds to flow in from player sales, including a big deal involving Jacob Ramsey. Arsenal’s £18m ask for Trossard is well within Villa’s budget.

However, limited minutes in a competitive squad may be pushing him to explore a fresh challenge. That is particularly with the World Cup is around next year.

Gunners weighing future amid squad shake-up

At the Emirates, Trossard’s future is hanging in the balance. Though Arteta values his skill set and work rate. But, the recent signing of Noni Madueke and ongoing interest in Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze could see the Belgian’s role further reduced. This is where Villa’s proposal becomes enticing. He will be given more game time and a key role in Emery’s system. Additionally, he’ll be getting a chance to play in Europe with the Villans aiming high again.

For the North London side, it may come down to squad balance and being able to have financial flexibility. Selling Trossard would give space for new players. On the other hand, Villa would get an experienced PL performer who would be ready to hit the ground running.

Trossard will now have make a career-defining decision of his own. He can choose to stay and fight for minutes in North London, or begin a new chapter in Birmingham. There he would be a regular starter. Either way, this is a transfer to keep your eye on as the clock runs down.
