United line up Hjumland as midfield target

Emiliano Martínez

Man United are lining up a £50m swoop for Sporting CP captain Morten Hjumland. This comes after the Red Devils failed in their chase for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.

Man United turn attention towards Hjumland

Manchester Utd’s transfer window has so far revolved around attacking additions. Yet Ruben Amorim knows balance is key, and the focus has now turned to their midfield.

Brighton’s Carlos Baleba had been identified as the dream signing. But, the south coast club refusing to negotiate. So, United have shifted their gaze towards a player who has already been hailed as an “absolute monster” in midfield. As per the Sun, Sporting CP skipper Morten Hjumland is now the name on the radar.

Amorim is well aware of the Dane’s reputation in Portugal. He has great energy and ball-winning ability. That has made him a key player under Ruben Amorim during the boss’ sporting days.

Reports claim United are preparing a £50m approach before the window shuts. Although, the Lisbon giants have a £68m clause in place. The PL side hope a deal can be struck with performance-based add-ons.

Hjumland, just 26, is seen as someone who could instantly add bite and leadership to Old Trafford’s midfield. With only two weeks left in the market, the urgency around this deal is real.

Old targets on hold

Baleba remains a long-term target for United, but his valuation is out of reach for now. Brighton’s refusal means the Red Devils cannot risk waiting another year without strengthening a key area. That is why the attention has swung to Hjumland. He could be tempted to reunite with his old boss in England even without UCL football.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is another name floating in the background. But Palace’s stance is similar to Brighton’s, so no sale this summer.

Attack has been bolstered, now midfield steel is the priority for Utd. If United can close the deal at £50m, it may prove one of the smartest move this summer.
