Gael Clichy believes Arsenal had their eyes on Alexander Isak before finances forced them to move for Viktor Gyokeres instead.
Isak was the dream for Arsenal claims Gael Clichy
Former Arsenal defender Gael Clichy, speaking to the Metro, revealed that his old club were desperate to bring in Alexander Isak this summer. Although, the Swede proved too costly as Newcastle demanded a fee only Liverpool were willing to meet.
Isak defined a huge transfer window for the Reds. They also brought in Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike. Arsenal ended its search for a top-class No.9 with Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon. Gyokeres comes to the PL with a good goal scoring record in Portugal. But, Clichy suggested that Isak’s quality in the PL made him the more “ideal” target.
The comparison is hard to ignore. Isak was electric for Newcastle, showing both flair and consistency against the league’s toughest defenses. He has the pace, link-up play, and sharp finishing that was perfect for Arsenal’s system. But, Arsenal now face the challenge of reshaping their attack around Gyokeres.
A season of big tests ahead
For Mikel Arteta, the task now is to make Gyokeres click. The Swede is a more traditional finisher. It’s likely to take time to adjust Arsenal’s frontline to his style. Nevertheless, his numbers at Sporting prove that he can be a high-volume scorer. The PL will be a tough challenge to see if he can deliver for Arsenal.
Meanwhile, all attention will be on Isak at Liverpool. He is suited to shine under a squad that already won the league last year. Now, the club is adding even more firepower to the mix. The race between Isak and Gyokeres could define not only their individual seasons but also the title battle.
Author’s Opinion:
Isak might feel like the one that got away for Arsenal. But, Gyokeres deserves a fair shot before judgments are made. One thing’s clear, this season will show if Arsenal’s move pays off.
