Chelsea superstar Frank Lampard chooses his all-star XI
When one of the Premier League’s greatest midfielders puts together an all-time XI, the football world listens. Lampard, who is now managing Coventry City, combined experience and respect when he named his dream team.
He selected six of his former Chelsea teammates in his list. This shows the strength of the bond he developed during those successful years at Stamford Bridge. Petr Cech gained the gloves, his back four was strong and classy in Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry, Vincent Kompany, and Ashley Cole.
His midfield had the artistry of Xavi and Iniesta. He put Cristiano Ronaldo’s power on the right and Gareth Bale’s speed on the left.
Up top, he trusted two of the deadliest strikers the game has seen. He selected Drogba and Lionel Messi as the strikers to lead from the front.
Lampard’s all-time XI : Petr Cech (GK); Ivanovic (RB), John Terry (CB), Vincent Kompany (CB), Ashley Cole (LB); Xavi (CM), Iniesta (CM), Cristiano Ronaldo (RM), Gareth Bale (LM); Didier Drogba (ST), Lionel Messi (ST).
The Englishman left out close rivals like Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand. Even Eden Hazard, one of the Blues’ most talented players, could not find a way into this elite XI. The list clearly reflects raw talent but also had mentalities to win at the very very top.
Why is Messi his GOAT ?
The big headline, though, was Lampard choosing Lionel Messi as football’s true GOAT. For ages, the debates between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have divided fans around the world. Although, the former Chelsea star made it clear which way he leaned.
Add that to his great tally of 91 goals in a single calendar year, eight Ballon d’Ors, 12 league titles, four UCLs, and two Copa Americas. Lampard has shared a pitch with legends, but even he admits Messi is in a class of his own.
Author’s Opinion:
Frank Lampard’s picks show a mix of loyalty and honesty, but crowning Lionel Messi as the GOAT feels spot on.
