Chelsea are weighing up a shock move as they keep tabs on Spurs defender.
Spurs defender on Chelsea radar
Micky van de Ven’s rise at Tottenham hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Dutchman has quickly established himself as one of the most dependable defenders in the PL after coming over from Wolfsburg. He has speed, level head on the ball, and understanding of the game. It’s no surprise that he is attracting interest from the giants of Europe.
As per the Boy Hotspur, Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are all taking note of him. Spurs managed to sign him on reasonable wages, however, that could work against them now. Top clubs with deeper pockets are considering to make a move for him. Van de Ven would be an automatic upgrade for Chelsea, as they have struggled to stay consistent at the back.
Tottenham faces a familiar problem
Tottenham fans understand this story quite well. Too often the club have lost their best player or talent to an excess amount of cash from their competitors. Van de Ven knows that Spurs gave him the right opportunity. But, he will also be thinking he is ready to play at the very top regularly.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are also tracking him as well. On the other hand, Chelsea are desperate for a leader in their back line. So, Spurs could find themselves fighting a losing battle.
Although, Thomas Frank’s side are in the UCL this season, but there’s no guarantee of that every year. That said, Chelsea and Liverpool can offer bigger salaries and long-term ambitions. So, it’s easy to see why this transfer buzz is starting to heat up.
Author’s Opinion:
Spurs have to match the ambition and financial muscle of their rivals. If not, Van de Ven leaving feels like only a matter of time. Chelsea, in particular, would be smart to move early before Liverpool make their play.
