Bruno Fernandes passed a century of goals for Manchester United on Saturday when he scored his 100th goal for the club in his 200th Premier League appearance, at Old Trafford. The Portuguese midfielder put United ahead in its 2-1 win over Chelsea, a night that also featured two red cards in the first half.
Milestone Night at Old Trafford
United struck early as Fernandes reacted quickest to Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu’s header and guided the ball home, moments after Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez saw red inside five minutes. A lengthy VAR check confirmed the goal, handing the skipper his place in the club’s record books.
Casemiro added a powerful header to double United’s lead before being dismissed himself following the interval. Chelsea recovered through Trevoh Chalobah but United survived to win a thrilling match. United substituted Fernandes late on, but he had already made his mark.
Entering United’s Record Books
The 31-year-old became the 23rd player in club history to reach 100 goals, moving ahead of legendary captain Bryan Robson. He is now level with Joe Cassidy and George Wall in United’s all-time scoring charts. Since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, Bruno Fernandes has scored 64 Premier League goals and is closing in on another milestone, just four games short of 300 appearances for the club.
Speaking afterwards, he told Sky Sports: “Every goal is important. It doesn’t matter the moment. It’s a big moment for me to reach that milestone for a massive club, I won’t hide from that. If I can get more goals to help the team, that’s what matters the most.”
Author’s Opinion
Fernandes’ century highlights his impact as the leader of United. For a midfielder to have hit 100 goals in just under six years emphasises his consistency and significance. With further milestones looming, he is the heartbeat of this Manchester United side.
