Amad Diallo has landed himself in hot water after his post-match link-up with ex-teammate Alejandro Garnacho.
Fans slam Amad following link-up with Garnacho
While Manchester United‘s 2-1 triumph over Chelsea should have been the tale of the night, a tale of events surrounding Amad Diallo stole the headlines.
The winger created controversy when he swapped shirts with Alejandro Garnacho at full-time. Garnacho, now in Chelsea blue after a £40m summer switch, didn’t even get off the bench. But, he still sparked drama.
Man Utd fans spotted the moment and weren’t impressed, with some even calling for the club to move Amad on. Things ramped up when Amad posted a photo of him and Garnacho together in the corridors of Old Trafford. He later deleted the photo and cleared his Instagram feed.
It was an unnecessary storm on a night where Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro had already done the damage early. Ruben Amorim’s side had battled through a tough first half that saw two red cards, but their lead held strong.
Rather than celebrating the hard-fought three points, Amad’s dedication and focus were questioned by fans. Meanwhile, Garnacho got chants reminding him of his exit from the club this past summer.
Winger is yet to start for Chelsea
The Argentina international is yet to make a start for the West London side. He made his debut in a 2-2 draw against Brentford. He also came off the bench in a UCL defeat to Bayern. The player is yet to make a real impact under Enzo Maresca. But his move away from Manchester was always going to sting.
He had been pushed out by Amorim last season. He was training alone and listed in the so-called ‘bomb squad’ alongside Rashford and Sancho. When Chelsea swooped late in the window, he signed a long-term deal that runs until 2032. He become just the fourth senior player to make the move between the two rivals in over a decade.
Author’s Opinion:
Amad should have read the room better. In football, perception matters as much as performance. The shirt swap may seem harmless, but in the eyes of United fans it touched a nerve.
