Mikel Arteta has come out in support of Viktor Gyokeres after the striker’s quiet recent games.
Mikel Arteta is full faith in Gyokeres
Arsenal’s new striker had another poor day against a top rival. This time in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City. Viktor Gyokeres was signed for £55m during the summer window. He found it tough to enter the match and finished the night without a shot and a total of just 22 touches.
This comes following tough games at Old Trafford and Anfield. The striker’s near moment of glory came when he nearly connected with a low-cross from Leandro Trossard. But, the ball skimmed past him knee to the corner flag.
Despite the lack of goals raising some doubts, Arteta immediately came in support of Viktor Gyokeres. The head coach was adamant that the Swede works hard without the ball. The manager believes the player sometimes got a bit unlucky with the fine margins.
In the meantime, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, wasn’t very impressed with the Gunners’ striker. When discussing after the game on Sky Sports, Carragher thinks Arsenal aren’t making enough chances for Gyokeres. He argued the real problem is not finishing, it’s the team and their lack of creativity.
Martinelli steals the show
If Gyokeres found life tough, Gabriel Martinelli once again showed his value off the bench. Left out of the starting eleven, the winger came on late and delivered a stunning equaliser. This was the second time in a week Martinelli came to Arsenal’s rescue after scoring in Europe against Athletic Bilbao. Martinelli’s energy and quickness have convincingly showed he deserves a start against Port Vale in the Carabao Cup.
Arteta praised Martinelli’s mentality and made a slight hint about possibly giving him more minutes. Although, Noni Madueke’s fitness remains in question after being withdrawn at half-time against City. The draw keeps the Gunners close to Man City in the table. But, both remain behind leaders Liverpool after five games.
Author’s Opinion:
Gyokeres may not have lit up the pitch yet, but strikers often need time to adapt. Arsenal’s bigger worry is creating clear chances. With Martinelli pushing hard, Arteta has a good problem on his hands.
