Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has addressed the situation of Axel Disasi. He insisted the defender won’t return despite a injury pile-up.
Maresca has shared an update on Disasi return
Enzo Maresca made it clear in his press conference that Axel Disasi won’t be part of his squad even with Chelsea’s centre-back options falling apart. The Frenchman was on the market all summer but couldn’t seal a move. He is now training with the so-called “bomb squad” at Cobham.
Reports suggest he snubbed three PL loan switches on deadline day while a late return to Monaco also collapsed. That decision has backfired. He’s been frozen out and looks set for months on the sidelines until the January window reopens.
Meanwhile, Maresca has been dealt another injury issue. Tosin is sidelined by a calf injury and Wesley Fofana is ruled out after suffering a concussion against Lincoln. Also, Levi Colwill is already out for the season with an ACL blow.
Right now, Trevoh Chalobah and youngster Josh Acheampong are the only CBs available. But, Maresca insists Disasi remains off the table.
Chelsea suffering from poor summer calls
The current crisis shows Chelsea’s failure to act when Maresca asked for defensive options after Colwill’s injury. The club took a risk with existing options. Now, the club is paying the price.
Defensive errors have already affected their point totals this season. They have only limited options to fill the gap. The club is also refusing to bring Disasi back into the fold.
For now, Chelsea will simply have to settle with what they have. But, the more important question is whether the club’s call will come back to trouble them for months to come. With the schedule piling up and the defence stretched thin, every mistake could prove costly.
Author’s Opinion:
Keeping Disasi out in a moment of crisis might look risky. But Maresca seems determined to build a squad on trust and discipline. Still, the club’s failure to replace Colwill leaves them chasing shadows at the back.
