Maresca gives update on Joao Pedro

Enzo Maresca gives new Joao Pedro update. The Chelsea boss hinted the striker isn’t fully fit ahead of a crucial week at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca provides update on Joao Pedro

Chelsea’s win over Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup have eased the mood slightly. But, head coach Enzo Maresca has bigger problems on his hands. The Blues boss revealed striker Joao Pedro only managed his first training session back on Thursday. This comes after battling fitness issues that cropped up following the Man United defeat.

In the meantime, star midfielder Cole Palmer is not expected back until a little after this international break. Regular defensive starters Tosin and Wesley Fofana are also presently unavailable. So, the squad has limited options on the bench. Pedro has been carrying the attack with Liam Delap also sidelined. But, the Blues’ head coach admitted his leading man is not at full capacity.

Defining week ahead for the Blues

Today’s Brighton clash is only the start of a tough run. The next fixture in the UCL is Benfica coming to the Bridge. That also proves to be the eagerly awaited return from former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho. Then it is Liverpool, the champions, in what will be another big game.

Three home games in quick succession could be very important in determining Chelsea’s season. Pedro will be critical to Chelsea’s chances of coming through this run. If he can shake off the niggles and deliver, the Blues may just keep pace. But, if his body breaks down, Chelsea’s already thin squad could be staring at more dropped points.

Author’s Opinion:

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has every right to be concerned. Without Joao Pedro firing, the West London side look short up top. This tough week could either revive their campaign or expose just how fragile the squad really is.
