€60m Star Rejects Liverpool, but Suarez Urges Anfield Move

Liverpool’s summer transfer plans take a hit as Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo reportedly turned down a €60m (£52.2m) offer. Despite winning the Premier League last season, the Reds were active in the market, bringing in players like Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni. With Leoni gone for the remainder of the season and Ibrahima Konaté’s future far from certain, Liverpool are as desperate defensively as anyone in Europe.

Liverpool’s Failed Pursuit of Araujo

Spanish media indicate that Liverpool were one of four sides to make offers for Araujo, the others being Tottenham, Chelsea, and Juventus. 26-year-old Uruguay international Araujo insisted that he wished to remain at Barcelona, where he has a contract running to 2031 and a €60m release clause.

Since 2018, Araujo has featured 181 times for the Catalans, hitting 11 goals and offering seven assists, winning LaLiga and the Copa del Rey twice. Although he snubbed Liverpool, he is still a long-term transfer target of the Reds as a possible heir to Virgil van Dijk.

Suarez’s Involvement & Future Targets

Adding intrigue, former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez reportedly contacted Araujo to encourage a move to Anfield. Suarez’s message suggested Liverpool are “going all out” to sign him, though no other outlet has confirmed this. Meanwhile, Marc Guehi remains Liverpool’s top defensive target. The Crystal Palace centre-back could be a free agent next summer, and sources say the Reds are preparing to make a strong push in January.

Author’s Take

Liverpool obviously rate Araujo highly, but his commitment to Barcelona means a transfer isn’t imminent. Suarez’s appeal might sow a seed, but the Reds should prioritize Guehi and other defenders in order to get near-term reinforcements. With Van Dijk getting older and the future of Konate in doubt, forward planning is paramount for Liverpool’s defensive solidity.
