Top 5 Midfielders Who Ruled Madrid in the 21st century

Real Madrid’s history is full of icons, but its midfielders have often been the quiet architects behind the glory. Let’s take a look at the five including Zidane, Modric, Kroos, Casemiro & Alonso.

1. Zidane

In 2001, Zinedine Zidane, in the greatest move of his generation from Juventus, became the hero of Real Madrid’s ‘Galacticos’ era.  The beauty was in all his touches, fakes, and trickery. Zidane controlled the game with his presence, mixing grace with brute force.

The volley which was scored by him in the UCL final 2002 against Bayer Leverkusen is not only a moment to see in highlight reels, but it also has a place in the history of football.

Zidane certainly did not rely on the stats all the time, but the figures that came from the 227 matches he played—47 goals and 68 assists—are nothing but indubitable.

2. Luka Modric

Modric was the heartbeat of Los Blancos. The Croatian wizard of wonder intertwined toughness and elegance, ruling speed with the finesse of a maestro. Despite being 39, he still rules over games as if the clock did not tick for him.

His winning of the coveted 2018 Ballon d’Or was just an acknowledgment of the common people’s sentiment to his being a midfielder of our times.

3. Toni Kroos

Then, Kroos came on the scene, the German wizard who took the passing to a level that was impossible to defend. The passing segment was always dictated by Kroos. He drove the game with his ball regardless of the distance, be it 5 yards or 50 yards switch.

After reaching the pinnacle of the world in 2024, he quit thereby confirming that his timing was not only perfect in the field but also out of it.

4. Casemiro

It was Casemiro who held everything together, the enforcer who performed the dirty work which others could not even dream of. Besides, he could also make a perfect shot or deliver a piercing pass. Without him, the other two wouldn’t have looked half as comfortable.

Five UCL titles later, that trio will forever be Madrid’s midfield gold standard.

5. Xabi Alonso

Before the KCM trio, Xabi Alonso was the one who connected Real Madrid’s midfield during its hardest transition. At the time of his move from Liverpool to Real Madrid in 2009, Barcelona was already controlling Spain, but slowly the calm Alonso’s presence started to be a game changer. Xabi was not flashy, however, his passing range, understanding of the game and his leadership made him a must-have.

During his inaugural season, he contributed to Madrid’s point tally of 96 and afterwards, he became the one to raise both LaLiga and UCL trophies. The 2011-12 season gave him the award of LaLiga Best Midfielder but his importance was recognized beyond just the titles.

The football IQ of Alonso turned Madrid into a team that could attack and defend very effectively. His departure did not take away from the fact that people still appreciated his fidelity and calmness. He is now a successful manager at Bayer Leverkusen and many believe that he will be the next Madrid head coach and really it seems like a matter of destiny.

Author’s Opinion:

Midfielders from Real Madrid have historically performed functions beyond just passing or tackling, they’ve always been the backbone of every victorious period. The dynamic of Zinedine was followed by Luka and that of Casemiro was toughness. Each player was instrumental in his own way. The Bernabeu might get a makeover, but the magic of its midfield will carry on.
