Chelsea starlet makes Champions League history

London‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ side Chelsea kid Alejandro Garnacho created a moment that will go down in Champions League history as the Blues drew Qarabag 2-2. The young winger, a blue team substitute, scored the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌equalizer. Therefore,‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ he became the youngest player under 20 years of age to score Champions League goals for two different English clubs. In Baku, it was the ex-Red Devils that came to Chelsea’s rescue and gave them the spark they were ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌lacking.

One Change Too Many Led to Chelsea Losing Their Rhythm

Following‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ an amazing game against Tottenham, the decision was made by the head coach to rest some of the key players in the team. Enzo Maresca did just that by benching Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Garnacho. The Champions League’s David and Goliath went all out and were successful in Chelsea’s defense ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌twice.

While Garnacho’s introduction changed the pace and secured a draw, the question of Maresca’s extreme rotation tactic in crucial games still lingers.

Maresca Stands By His Tactics

Once the game had ended, Maresca was still convinced that his plan was the right one, and he even mentioned the Club World Cup as the reason for needing recovery time. “Players just can’t play every three days,” he maintained.

The Italian was also less defensive in saying that his players should be more tactful in defense and take more of their opportunities. Chelsea are breathing in the group and it will be imperative that they make better decisions in the upcoming matches.

Author’s Opinion

One of the reasons why Chelsea signed Garnacho was very clear after the game. His desire and perfect timing totally changed the course of the match. Maresca’s rotation decision may make sense, however, the team’s inconsistency is still a major problem. If the Blues are to go through to the next round, they must find the right balance between liveliness and ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌steadiness.
