Frenkie de Jong receives an ultimatum from Barcelona

Barcelona

The rumors surrounding Frenkie De Jong are not new. For the past two season’s transfer windows, some big European clubs have been associated with De Jong. German champions Bayern Munich, French Champions PSG, English Champions Manchester City, Manchester United, and most recently Chelsea have all been referred to as potential suitors of the Dutchman.

Barcelona has been more than eager to let Frenkie De Jong go for a reported fee that could reach around 80 million euros. The transfer saga started with Manchester United showing strong interest in the player. New boss Erik Ten Hag, who coached De Jong in Ajax, wanted him as the statement signing. ETH is looking to get Manchester United back as one of the strongest teams in the Premier League. De Jong is supposedly the vital clog that would make Manchester United click.  It was reported that Manchester United had agreed on a fee close to 85 million euros with Barcelona.

However, De Jong has rejected the Red Devils’ offer several times. De Jong wants to play for a Champions League team, while Manchester United are in the Europa League this season. It is also well known that playing for Barcelona has always been his childhood dream.

Seeing a possible chance, Chelsea has entered the race. The Blues are reportedly close to agreeing on a fee with Barcelona. However, they want to convince de Jong before making an official bid.

Frenkie De Jong: What’s next for him?

Club president Joan Laporta has assured the fans that Frenkie De Jong is a Barcelona player and that Barca is not in favor of selling him. Laporta has also publicly requested De jong to take a pay cut to stay.

According to several reports, the Dutchman is the highest earner in the squad. His salary this season is expected to be around 22 million. With Barcelona facing strict financial restraints to register their signings, the massive wage is not helping the board. Barca also owes him 17 million euros in deferred salary.

Frenkie De Jong’s camp is unwilling to take a wage cut and leave the club.

According to Jacob Bens, Barcelona has offered him two choices. Either to take a wage cut or join any of either club.

Barcelona, however, cannot force the player out. It has to respect the player’s choice as he is still under contract. Laporta has himself stated this publicly. Barca has also contacted his agents for possible criminalities in his contract. Former president Bartomeu had renewed the contracts of four players only a week before his resignation.

Contrary to several reports, Cules surely want De Jong in the club as he is one of the most loved players.
