Barcelona have failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds for the second successive season. President, Joan Laporta has spent a lot of money in the summer to rebuild the squad. However, due to the recent results, there have been reports of possible sacking for Xavi Hernandez.
The Barcelona chief has publicly backed club legend and current manager, Xavi Hernandez. The Manager has also publicly taken responsibility for the club’s exit from the UEFA Champions League this season. He mentioned the defeat against Inter Milan at San Siro and criticized the refereeing in the game. However, he accepted that despite playing better than Bayern Munich in the first half, the Blaugrana could not capitalize in Munich.
The missed chances eventually cost the club a valuable result. Xavi has accepted that his players were not focused after getting knocked out of the competition against the Bavarians recently. However, the Manager has also vowed to come back stronger from this tough period this season.
Joan Laporta believes ups and downs were expected
The club President has said to Barca TV that the exit from the competition cannot be blamed on the players or the Manager. The President further said:
“We have to look forward, because we have La Liga and other competitions left. This is a young project in which from the beginning we knew we were going to have ups and downs. The league remains and we have to show that we continue. La Liga is very important, and we have it close. The message is to look forward. This has already happened.”
The message from the President is clear that he does not see the exit from the European competition as a disaster. He understands that the rebuild is going to take time and the club is willing to have patience. Manager, Xavi Hernandez should be extremely happy with the President’s reaction and focus on delivering in La Liga!!
