Allegri Blocks Shock Move as Chelsea’s Top Signing Slips Away

Chelsea’s pursuit of a new No. 1 has very much hit a wall. AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri has said that Mike Maignan will remain with the club after a deadline day transfer to Stamford Bridge fell through and terminating the Blues chances of signing the Frenchman this summer.

Chelsea Deal for Maignan Falls Through on Deadline Day

Chelsea held advanced negotiations with Milan throughout June for Maignan, viewing him as one of the main figures in Enzo Maresca’s squad restructure. The Premier League outfit considered him as their No. 1 for the long term. But negotiations collapsed at the eleventh hour after the two teams could not agree on a fee.

Reports claim Milan set a £25 million price tag for Mike Maignan, while Chelsea offered closer to £15 million. Although the keeper was keen on the switch, Milan would not budge on their asking price. So the move collapsed just hours before the deadline. Maignan, who is under contract through 2026, continues to be a central part of Milan’s future.

Allegri Shuts Door on Exit, Chelsea Look at Alternatives

Putting an end to the rumors, Allegri said during a news conference on Monday, “Maignan is staying. He is an important part of our team and there is no intention to sell him.” His message was echoed by sporting director Igli Tare, as Milan is persistent on his release being inevitable after then gaining the lead.

And Chelsea will also need to look at other targets as Maresca weighs up his options. Kepa Arrizabalaga has completed his £5 million move to Arsenal after they activated the release clause and with Djordje Petrovic in advanced talks to join Sunderland, Chelsea are due to bring in another goalkeeper before leaving for the US tour later this month.

Maignan’s signing, however, allows Milan the stability they will need in the back for the upcoming season.
