Arsenal

Portugal defender Antonio Silva experienced a horrible night against Georgia. According to TBR his value is around £85m.

Antonio Silva is linked with Arsenal move

Antonio Silva is a phenomenal defender of Benfica. He had a great season with them. So, he earned a spot at the Portugal National team. Portugal had a bright start in Euro 2024 but as the tournament progressed their performance level declined.

The gunners are heavily linked with the defender. At this moment Arsenal center back Jakub Kiwior is attracting interests from Italian clubs like Napoli, Juventus. So there is a chance that the Polish international can leave Arsenal in search of more game time. So, Mikel Arteta has identified Antonio Silva as his ideal replacement. He will cost around £85m.

Antonio Silva’s performance against Georgia

The young defender featured in a Euro match against Georgia. The Georgian attack badly exposed the defender in a group stage match. And they got defeated by 2 goals. Eventually Portugal finished 3rd in Group F. So, they were unable to qualify for the Euro 2024 group of 16.

A Portuguese newspaper outlet A Bola gave feedback on the young defender and rated his performance 3 out of 10 and they said, ‘Tremendous mistake in the second minute which led to a goal for Georgia. What crossed his mind to make that pass to Kvaratskhelia, who, equipped with high speed, completed the move successfully to make it 1-0? He apologised to his teammates, but again missed a clearance in a move in which he conceded a penalty. He left at 66’, without glory.

Renowned Portuguese newspaper Jornal De Noticias also commented on his performance against Georgia and said, ‘A game to forget for António Silva, with two errors that resulted in two goals. Martínez was stubborn, insisting on the three central players until the end.

Possibility of the transfer

After the horrible performance in Euro 2024, Arsenal might look for other alternatives for Silva. On top of that the Portuguese defender bears an hefty price tag. Normally any club will think twice before spending such amount of money on a new player.

But we have seen Mikel Arteta always trusts on a player’s ability. For example when Arsenal signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea, everyone believed that it will be a waste of money. But Arteta trusted in the player and helped him to regain his goal scoring form. So, we may also see a same story with Antonio SIlva.
