Arsenal are interested in signing Barcelona star Frenkie De Jong in 2026. Reports in Spain claim that the Gunners are monitoring the player’s situation closely.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are watching Frenkie De Jong

Arsenal are plotting their long-term plans and Frenkie De Jong has emerged as a major target for 2026. The Dutch playmaker currently pockets close to £420k a week at Barcelona. He could be a free agent when his current deal ends.

Head coach Mikel Arteta has been following his progress. He sees him as the perfect piece to link up with Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and captain Martin Odegaard. That trio already makes Arsenal’s midfield one of the best in Europe. But, the addition of De Jong would give them an extra edge in creativity and control.

Spanish outlet Fichajes claim the Gunners are genuinely excited about the possibility. Although, Barca remain keen to tie him down to fresh terms. The issue for the Catalan side is that any extension would require the player to take a big pay cut. That is something the player may not welcome.

Barcelona standing firm

De Jong has been a key player for Barca since they paid £65m to Ajax during 2019. During that time, he has made more than 250 appearances and has helped secure six trophies. At 28 now, he is moving into the prime of his career. For this reason, Arsenal believe he can be a statement signing in 2026.

The Gunners already spent over £200m this summer. However, Arteta’s rebuild looks far from complete and there still could be exits including Leandro Trossard among others. For now, the PL side will keep tracking developments at the Nou Camp.

If Barcelona fail to reach an agreement, the North London giants could be in pole position. They will try to land one of Europe’s most complete midfielders without paying a transfer fee.
