Arsenal fans have fired back at Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher after the pundits laughed at a joke aimed at Viktor Gyokeres during a fan debate show.
Scholes and Carragher criticized for Gyokeres joke
Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres has barely settled into life in north London. But, he is already in the middle of a storm. During Sky Sports’ The Overlap, Tottenham fan Ben Bowman mocked the striker by saying he looked like he was “playing with jeans on.”
What was intended as a normal banter quickly became a worry for Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragger. They both also found the joke funny and laughed it off. The Arsenal fans labeled the response as “pathetic.” They felt the pundits were disrespectful of a player still finds his feet in the PL.
The annoyance is justified. Gyokeres did not have a great first outing at Old Trafford, but he helped Arsenal win 1-0. On his Emirates debut, he made a proper statement by scoring two goals in a 5-0 rout of Leeds. Many fans think the pundits should be a bit fairer on judging a player who has so much power, pace and an eye for goal.
Striker backed to shine despite criticism
For Arsenal’s faithful, the laughter was more than banter. It was a slight on their club’s record signing. While Scholes and Carragher might see the “jeans” joke as harmless, the fans didn’t find it funny. Gyokeres is no luxury signing. He’s a forward who works hard, stretches defenses, and is already proving he can deliver in big moments. If he keeps up this form, the joke will be on those who doubted him.
Arsenal fans are right to back their striker. With Mikel Arteta building a squad to challenge for silverware, Gyokeres’ role will only grow. The Swede has every chance to silence critics with goals and grit over the season.

Scholes and Carragher should know better than to laugh off a player who’s just starting out in England. Gyokeres looks hungry, and if he keeps scoring, he’ll have the last laugh.
