Arsenal in race for Stuttgart midfielder

Mikel Arteta and Arsenal looks set to beat PL rivals in the chase for a £52m-rated Stuttgart midfielder.

Arsenal move ahead in transfer race for Stuttgart midfiedler

Arsenal are moving ahead of Manchester United in the battle to sign Stuttgart midfielder Alex Stiller, as per the Daily Express. The German midfielder has been lighting up the Bundesliga with his creativity and passing range.

Reports claim Man United tried to pounce on a release clause earlier this summer. But, the deal collapsed after the clause expired and Stiller himself showed little interest in moving to Old Trafford.

The Gunners are understood to be willing to match Stuttgart’s £52m valuation. That is a fee that reflects Stiller’s rapid rise since joining on a free transfer just two years ago. In that time, he has registered 18 assists across 85 games. With 11 of those coming in the current campaign alone. His form has also earned him regular call-ups for Germany.

What Stiller brings to Arteta’s system

Statistically, Stiller is among the best ball movers in Europe. He averages close to 10 progressive passes per game. This puts him in the top two percent of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues. He has nearly four shot-creating actions and nine passes into the final third per game. This is why Arteta is so keen.

The player is not known for his defensive grit though. But, his vision and passing tempo could complement to Declan Rice’s steel and Martin Odegaard’s flair.

Liverpool may also still hover in the background, but Arsenal’s current momentum and Arteta’s reputation gives them the upper hand. If the deal crosses the line, the Gunners will have secured one of the most exciting midfield talents in Europe.

Author’s Opinion:

Arteta knows his midfield blueprint, and Stiller fits it like a glove. Beating United to this signing would likely strengthen Arsenal. It will also send a clear message about where the real project in England lies.
