Arsenal have seen some players return but a few big names are still on the treatment table due to injury.
Arteta & Arsenal counting on key stars amid injury issues
Arsenal supporters could breathe a collective sigh of relief when Martin Odegaard came off the bench on Sunday. A back injury has clearly ended with his appearance in the comeback victory versus Newcastle.
The captain came back at a key time when they needed someone to settle the ship. He injected some life into the game. With Odegaard and Bukayo Saka back, Mikel Arteta has got more attacking depth.
Meanwhile, Arsenal continue to chase Liverpool at the top of the table. That being said, the fact that players are returning is encouraging. Although, there are still players who are missing that could be hugely influential in their upcoming games.
Noni Madueke’s setback has been a particular blow. The winger picked up a knee injury in the game against Man City. He will likely miss all games until late November. The Gunners are now also missing some much-needed pace from out wide. The coach will be looking to have it back as the fixtures begin to pile up.
In addition, summer signing, Piero Hincapie, has also very quietly fallen out of contention. He only made a brief appearance in the UCL. But, he hasn’t been seen in the last two domestic games for an unknown reason. The return date is unknown as well. Now, that only adds to the muddle at the back.
Havertz recovery and long wait for Jesus
Kai Havertz, however, brings better news. The German underwent knee surgery but is already said to be walking and training at a steady pace. Arteta suggested that Havertz is in good shape which could lead to a return in November. His flexibility will be important in a squad stretched by injuries.
On the other hand, Gabriel Jesus is still the longest-term absentee. Still recovering from a serious ACL injury, the Brazilian is not expected back before December or even January. He was left out of the the UCL squad too. So, that tells Arsenal will miss him for a long time.
Author’s Opinion:
Arsenal have managed to keep pace at the top despite their injury list. But, the next month will be a test of squad depth. Getting Havertz back soon is vital, yet Jesus’ absence leaves a hole only he can fill.
