Reports suggest Arsenal and Manchester United are lining up a €40m bid to land Zeno Debast.
Arsenal, Man United chase Sporting’s Zeno Debast
Arsenal and Manchester United could make a January swoop for Sporting CP centre-back, Zeno Debast. The Red Devils are ready to lodge an offer of €40m as well. The Belgian is one of Europe’s most talented young defenders.
Although, his release clause sits at €80m. But, Man Utd believe they can tempt Sporting with a lower figure. That is given the player’s growing ambition to test himself at a bigger stage. The Red Devils see him as a long-term fix for their suspect backline. He is a player who can develop into a defensive leader at Old Trafford.
Debast, still just 21, has demonstrated nice poise on the ball and a good feel for the game. United’s interest isn’t without competition though. Arsenal and Aston Villa are following him closely as well. Borussia Dortmund and Napoli are also watching.
This makes the chase for his signature one of the best winter stories to follow.
Gunners’ dilemma in the chase
Arsenal’s position in the chase looks less convincing. Mikel Arteta already has depth in central defence. If they were to recruit Debast, the lad may only be watching from the bench. This is something he won’t want to do at this stage of his career.
United can practically guarantee him first team access. That is especially as they have had issues defensively in recent seasons.
Sporting CP are in no rush to sell and will demand a fee closer to his true value. But, they also know keeping him much longer may prove difficult with Europe’s biggest clubs circling.
Author’s Opinion:
Debast seems to be the type of signing United really need. He is young with some fearlessness and potential. Arsenal have also been tracking Debast. It will be interesting to see how this transfer chase turns out for all the parties involved.
