Arteta explains Madueke substitution

Mikel Arteta explains that Noni Madueke had to come off against Man City due of fitness concerns.

Arteta took Madueke off at half-time against Man City

For 45 minutes at the Emirates, Noni Madueke looked like Arsenal’s biggest threat. He started ahead of Bukayo Saka, who is still managing a hamstring issue. The Englishman gave Man City’s backline plenty to think about.

His speed and direct runs unsettled Pep Guardiola’s backline. He even forced Gianluigi Donnarumma to make a sharp save shortly before the break. Arsenal were behind 1-0 at halftime with Erling Haaland’s terrific goal. But, Madueke was one of the few bright spots supporting the Gunners.

When the second half started, Madueke was nowhere to be found. That confused the Gunners’ fans who watched Saka come on for Madueke and had considered Arteta’s bold tactical move. That wasn’t the case. Speaking after the match, the Arsenal boss clarified that Madueke wasn’t fit enough to continue. He admitted the winger had an “issue” that forced the early withdrawal.

Arsenal hope for quick recovery

Arsenal must be frustrated by Madueke’s substitution timing. That is after how vital he has been in the weeks leading up to this match. He has steadily integrated into the team following his move from Chelsea. He has been an option whenever Saka was not available. His willingness to take on defenders and play directly has added an element of football that was missing last year. Madueke has fit right in and has shown he can be explosive on the right side.

Now, the concern shifts to whether he’ll recover in time for Arsenal’s upcoming games. Supporters know the Gunners need their wide players firing if they’re to keep pace in the title race.

Author’s Opinion:

Madueke’s half-time exit wasn’t part of the plan, and Arsenal felt it. Assuming he remains healthy, he is not merely Saka’s second option, he is a starter in his own right. The sooner he can return to the team, the better it will be for Arsenal’s flow.
