Reports suggest Atletico Madrid, one of Spain’s top teams, plans to make a €40 million offer for Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella, their preferred candidate. The 26 years old footballer has become a star in the team led by Enzo Maresca, and Diego Simeone, the Atletico coach, sees him as the number one offensive player in defense.
The Madrid based club are allegedly planning a summer 2026 move to both back up their defence and also benefit from the veteran’s consistency and experience of the Premier League.
Atletico’s Transfer Plan
Reports suggest Atletico Madrid are thinking about the future and see Cucurella as a perfect player for Simeone’s high-intensity defensive system. The Spanish side considers an approximate offer of €40 million attainable.
Atletico’s focus on recruiting has revolved around getting players who have proven themselves, and with his success in the Premier League, Cucurella is a very attractive candidate. In view of Chelsea’s defensive problems this season, Simeone believes the Spaniard might be lured into going back home.
Chelsea’s Standpoint
Cucurella is still very important to Maresca, and this is especially the case after Jorrel Hato’s disappointing debut at Stamford Bridge. His defensive stability and providing the width in attack have gone a long way to Chelsea’s system.
The team could lose a lot of the balance it has if he left them, especially as the club is struggling in central defence. A Blues insider has also said that even if Atletico table a formal offer, Chelsea is not going anywhere close to that figure.
Author’s Opinion
It would very much be the wrong move by Chelsea if they decided to sell Cucurella. The club with his good performance and leadership qualities in the team should say no to Atletico and not give in to the temptation of making quick money.
