Barcelona anger grows after Dani Olmo injury

Barcelona is fuming once again, blaming Spain for injury to Dani Olmo during the international break.

Tension between Barcelona & Spain due to Dani Olmo injury

The relationship between Barcelona and the Spanish national team was always rocky. But, Dani Olmo’s recent injury has made everyone’s tension more visible. The Catalans are quite annoyed that their key players keep returning from the national team hurt and spoiling their season. Unfortunately, the same thing has happened to Olmo. He has got his calf hurt while training with the Spanish squad and is receiving therapy at the moment.

Before the injury, Barca had informed the football federation that Olmo was tired and required to rest, not to take part in full training sessions. However, even though there were these alarms, it is said that the Spanish team’s personnel continued with the training anyway. The midfielder was at last compelled to quit when the agony got worse. For a player just hitting rhythm in Hansi Flick‘s setup, the timing couldn’t be worse. The sense inside the club is that player welfare has once again taken a back seat to national team demands.

Barcelona frustrated due to Dani Olmo injury

The Spanish team’s matches with Georgia and Bulgaria have affected the momentum of the player. Olmo has withdrawn from the squad and the plans of Barca’s lineup are now upside down. The Spanish federation announced the calf injury, and sources suggest that he may be out of the game for three weeks. That’s a big blow for Barca taking into account that El Clasico is just around the corner.

Journalist Roger Arbusa revealed that Barca are “unhappy” with Spain’s handling of the situation. That’s putting it lightly. Club staff believe the warning signs were ignored. Lamine Yamal is already having struggles with discomfort during an earlier Spain camp. Now, this latest setback feels like deja vu. The feeling around Camp Nou is one of disbelief. That is due the same mistakes keep happening again and again. Barca’s medical team had flagged Olmo’s fatigue in advance, yet Spain allowed him to train at full intensity.

What this means for Barca

The spotlight now moves to rest and recovery of the damaged areas of the player. Olmo is going back to Barca for more medical tests, and the team is hopeful that the injury is not so severe as it was initially thought. Still, the very fact of an injury might spoil Flick’s plan for players at the very moment when the team has a lot of key matches. The loss of one of the most inventive players during such a critical period would be a great burden on the team as well as the pressure that it would have already experienced.

This scenario also brings to light a more vital talks about the management of player workloads by clubs and national teams. Barca is not the only one who thinks that their players are overused in the course of international holidays. What bothers them the most is the communication gaps. When a club sends detailed medical updates, it expects them to be respected. Olmo, on the other hand, had his case and it exposed a large gap between the recommendation and the real practice at the national level.

Author’s Opinion:

It makes sense for Barca to be angry at the national team. Recovery should always be the first option if a player’s fitness is clearly in question. Otherwise, the player will have to go through more training sessions than planned. Spain need to start listening or they’ll keep sending players back to their clubs in worse shape than they arrived.
