Calls are growing louder for the Arsenal boss to rethink his Riccardo Calafiori selection after his poor display against Newcastle.
A shaky night for Calafiori against Newcastle
Arsenal’s trip to Newcastle ended with three valuable points. But, not every Gunner walked off the pitch with their head held high. Riccardo Calafiori, who has moved from center-back to left-back under Arteta, had a tough night.
He looked nervous all night, getting a early yellow card and not winning a single duel before being hooked in the second half. He is a player on a big wage and trusted to be part of the best defense in the PL. But, his performance was alarming.
Fans celebrated Mikel Merino’s equaliser and Gabriel Magalhaes’ late winner. Although, they were just as vocal about Calafiori’s tough game. They made it clear they expect more from one of Arteta’s key players.
What really stung is that Arsenal have options. Youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has be waiting in the wings patiently, continues to be a key for England’s youth sides. His versatility and workrate makes him strong candidate for the left-back position. That is particularly in the wake of Calafiori’s error.
Although, victories are few and far between at St James’ Park. Now, all interest is turned to whether Arteta would make a brave selection call ahead of the next three games.
Time to back youth over big names
The Gunners now turn their focus on UCL before taking on West Ham. Many believe the moment has come to bring in Lewis-Skelly. Calafiori’s numbers in Newcastle tell the story of a player out of sync. He just had 43 touches, barely involved in attack, and too easily moved passed in defence.
In comparison, Lewis-Skelly provides energy, hunger, and a feeling of belonging, which Arsenal fans have been asking for. The young player is not merely a backup option. He is now being seen as one of the brightest generation of English players at the moment.
For Arteta, the decision is clear. Sticking with Calafiori might not give the desired results for now. Meanwhile, Lewis-Skelly could bring in a new dimension in Arsenal’s back line. Fans have made their voices heard, now it’s down to the head coach to listen.
Author’s Opinion:
Calafiori may yet have a key role to play this season, but Lewis-Skelly deserves the chance right now, Arsenal have to be bold when they are serious about trophies.
