Carrick Shock Name in Frame as Man Utd Eye Amorim Successor

Manchester United’s managerial saga has taken another twist, with Michael Carrick emerging as a shock contender to succeed Ruben Amorim if the Portuguese coach faces the sack. Carrick, a club legend and former caretaker, left Middlesbrough earlier this year and now finds himself out of work, publicly backed by ex-United coach Rene Meulensteen.

Carrick Seen as ‘Obvious Option’

Meulensteen, who worked under Sir Alex Ferguson, believes Carrick could make United “fantastic” if given the reins. He highlighted Carrick’s deep knowledge of the club, familiarity with several players, and prior spell as caretaker boss after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exit in 2021.

Currently working as an Amazon Prime pundit, Carrick has become an increasingly popular shout among fans. He is available and offers a solution in the short term, particularly as United weigh up how much it could cost them to actually sack Amorim. The Portuguese coach is contracted until 2027, with reports claiming that compensation would likely amount to near £12m if he were to be dismissed before November.

Pressure on Amorim Intensifies

Amorim’s future is under mounting scrutiny after a stuttering start to the season. United have managed just one league win, suffered a shock Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town, and looked well short in recent performances. Despite heavy investment in signings such as Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, results have not improved.

Carrick joins Gareth Southgate, Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola on the list of rumoured candidates. His Championship record with Middlesbrough was mixed, but his ties to Old Trafford make him a strong cultural fit.

Author’s Opinion

Carrick represents both the romantic and pragmatic option. His bond with the club, caretaker experience, and availability tick key boxes. But United’s board must weigh sentiment against ambition. Appointing Carrick would excite supporters but carries risk, given his limited top-flight track record. For now, Amorim still has time, yet Carrick’s candidacy has moved from fan chatter into the wider conversation.
