Chelsea are keeping tabs on Crystal Palace star. He is edging closer to the end of his contract.
Crystal Palace star on Chelsea radar
Marc Guehi’s summer window was nothing short of drama. A move to Liverpool was set up, medical done, fee agreed as well. But, Crystal Palace didn’t approve the move at the last minute after failing to sign a replacement.
Since then, his stock hasn’t dipped one bit. As per TBR Football, clubs across the PL are watching closely, knowing his deal runs out in the summer. Landing an England international of his caliber without paying a transfer fee is as rare as it gets.
For Chelsea, this is a potential reunion with a player they once developed in their academy. Their defensive woes last season were clear to see, and Guehi looks like a readymade fix.
Tottenham, Man Utd and Liverpool remain in the mix
Tottenham have two quality centre-backs in Romero and van de Ven. But, both have struggled with injuries. Head coach Thomas Frank can’t afford to leave his defence exposed again. So, Guehi would be an ideal addition to their backline.
Meanwhile, Man United also need a solid option who can take over from Harry Maguire long term. Guehi ticks that box with his leadership at the back.
Liverpool aren’t out of the race either. With Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation still unresolved, they could reignite their pursuit of a defender who already passed their medical once.
Another selling point for Guehi is his stats with Palace. He has showed in the last year that he has been one of the most reliable defenders in the league. He added some of the required support to help them reach the FA Cup and Community Shield. He’s quick, calm in possession, and tends not to lose many duels.. For top clubs, this is the sort of player that changes the game.
Author’s Opinion:
If Guehi leaves Palace for free, it’ll be one of the smartest signings of the summer. He’s got the class and mentality to start for any top side in England. Whoever lands him gets a defensive rock at a bargain.
